Causes:

Neck pain causes are usually simple and may range from wrong alignment of the spine, to bad sitting posture. An inflammation may also be the cause. Tightness in the neck muscles may lead to a stiff neck. This can be caused by physical or emotional stress and tension, which tightens the muscles, and also constricts the blood vessels, thus leading to a reduced blood flow to this area.

However, neck pain may also have more serious causes such as an impending heart attack. Sometimes a fractured collar bone or shoulder blade may also result in neck pain. Cervical spondylosis or degenerative arthritis, which fuses the spinal discs and presses on the spinal nerves, can also lead to neck pain.

Treatment of Neck Pain:

If you are afflicted with neck pain, it is best to consult a doctor to rule out any serious causes. If it is just an inflammation, pain killers may be recommended. If it is due to bad posture or weak neck muscles, you may be advised to perform some stiff neck exercises.

While selecting the neck pain relief exercises, it would be wise to strengthen other parts of the spine, too. You could incorporate some back pain exercises, shoulder pain exercises and cervical neck pain exercises. The upper and lower back, and the shoulders help to support the neck, so strengthening these muscles would be beneficial.

A few simple stretches and rotational exercises will provide immense relief. Take care to do the exercises under the guidance of a competent therapist or you may end up injuring yourself.

Yoga for neck pain: Yoga has been found to be particularly helpful for treating neck pain. The yoga exercises target not just the neck but also the entire spine and other core muscles of the body. They help to strengthen and tone the muscles and also loosen them up. Yoga also helps to release tension, which is another cause of neck pain.

Some of the yoga poses which are helpful for neck pain are the Cat Dog Pose, Cobra Pose, Downward Facing Dog Pose, Upward Facing Dog Pose and Plank Pose.
