The yoga sun salutation, also known as the Surya Namaskar, is a pose formed of 12 different postures which are performed in a series. Each of these movements performed in the yoga sun salutation is coordinated with breathing. With each movement, you either inhale or exhale, thus moving in a perfect rhythmic movement.
The yoga sun salutation is considered one of the most basic poses in yoga. An easy pose to perform, the yoga sun salutation extends a workout to the entire body. Though there are many different disciplines in yoga, the sun salutation is one pose which is common to all. In different yoga disciplines, the way a sun salutation is performed may be different. However, overall the yoga sun salutation provides an excellent early morning workout for the entire body.
As the name suggests, this pose is traditionally performed in front of the rising sun, offering prayers to the life giving energies of the sun. This is not only considered a physical movement, but also has far reaching spiritual benefits. The early rays of the sun, which the body absorbs while performing this pose, can heal many ailments and can help the body become stronger.
Since the yoga sun salutation pose is made up of 12 different postures, there are many health benefits of the pose. Each of the postures performed in the yoga sun salutation has specific health benefits. Physically, the yoga sun salutation pose can help in improving flexibility of the upper body—specifically the arms, neck and the shoulders. The sun salutation pose can also help improve both strength and stamina in the body.

The yoga sun salutation is considered the preliminary pose for anyone who is planning to start with a yoga workout. In many yoga classes, the yoga sun salutation is performed as a warm up exercise before moving on to more rigorous forms of exercises.
