The amount of calories you burn doing yoga, frequently simply referred to as ‘yoga calories’ depends on the type of yoga you are practicing. The most practiced and simplest form of yoga burns around 200 calories per hour. There are also ways to increase the number of ‘yoga calories’ you burn each time you practice yoga. All you need to do is to grow on each stretch that you do. This simply means that you must push yourself even more on each stretch. This will definitely result in more yoga calories being burned as well as more flexibility. The number of yoga calories burned by the different forms of yoga is given below. Power Yoga: This is an Americanized version of Ashtanga yoga. The yoga poses are more intensified in this type of yoga and one has to move more rapidly between one pose and the other. Power yoga classes only last for about 45 minutes rather than the usual 60 to 90 minutes. You can burn around 300 calories after such a class. Hatha Yoga: This is the gentlest form of yoga. It concentrates more on simple and basic yoga postures. These postures must be in tandem with the breathing techniques in order to achieve the right effect. The amount of calories burn while practicing this form of yoga is about 175 per hour. The number burned in this form is less as it is a gentle form of yoga. Bikram Yoga: This type of yoga is also known as hot yoga. The name came about as this yoga is practiced in a room where the temperature is 105°F and the humidity is kept at 40%. Bikram yoga consists of 26 different postures. This type of yoga burns the most calories – 630 yoga calories per hour. Vinyasa Yoga: This is a kind of energizing form of yoga. One pose is linked to another and the result is fluidity in the conventional yoga postures. The main postures that are used in this kind of yoga are the Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) series. You can burn approximately 445 calories per hour doing this kind of yoga. Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga means eight limbs and this refers to the eight spiritual practices that are talked about in the Yoga Sutras. Ashtanga yoga is a set of six series and the level of difficulty increases as you move from one series into another. The number of calories you can burn in Ashtanga yoga are 300.
