hatha yoga poses
Hatha yoga was introduced in the fifteenth century by Yogi Swatmarama. From Hatha yoga, many other forms of yoga have been developed, such as Bikram yoga, Ashtanga yoga, Power yoga, and Kundalini yoga. The word ‘hatha’ comes from Sanskrit which means combining the opposites. The word ‘ha’ means sun and ‘tha’ means moon. It brings together the positive and negative currents of the sun and moon in the system. The focus of Hatha yoga is primarily on the third asana and the fourth pranayama of the eight limbs of yoga. The goal is to bring a balance between the mind and body with the Hatha yoga poses, purification procedures (Shatkriyas), meditation, and yogic breathing (pranayamas). In performing the Hatha yoga poses you can improve your overall health. The practice of Hatha yoga poses has two primary objectives. The first is that for one to really practice mediation there should be at least one pose in which the practitioner can remain comfortable in the position for long periods. When an individual can master more of these poses, the inner meditation techniques can be developed. The second objective of practicing the Hatha yoga poses is to bring energy and health to the mind and body with the opening of the nadis (channels). There is no point in mastering the Hatha yoga poses by itself. However, mastering the Hatha yoga poses will strengthen your will and concentration and prevent you from giving too much attention to the inputs from the senses. Thus, the Hatha yoga poses will open the path to Dharana (concentration) and Pratyahara (retraction of the senses). The pranayama exercises in Hatha yoga are important in the mastering of one’s breathing. When an individual’s breath is mastered, the mastery of the mind is close. Through the pranayama exercises, the flow of vital life force is regulated through the body. There are some special techniques of breathing in which the flow of breath is alternated between both the nostrils. This helps in balancing the two hemispheres of the brain which is the primary goal of the breathing exercises. The breathing exercises in Hatha yoga also helps in activating the Kundalini. Hatha yoga is a good starting place on the path of yoga. Practice of the different Hatha yoga poses is helpful to people of all ages. The poses and breathing exercises are mild but very effective. These exercises will help bring about relaxation and open the energy channels allowing the spiritual energy to flow freely within you.
