Ashtanga yoga is known to be the base from which most other yoga disciplines have been derived. The modern styles of yoga borrow heavily from the movements of ashtanga yoga and there are many proponents of this style. While there are a lot of resources available for learning ashtanga yoga by yourself, it is not recommended for anyone to perform ashtanga vinyasa yoga on their own without proper guidance. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is an advanced level of yoga and if you are keen on practicing it on your own with the help of books and DVDs, it is best to first start with basic yoga for beginners. This way, you will have the basic knowledge of the yoga movements and other yoga techniques before you subject yourself to the practice of an advanced technique. For beginners, it is also a good idea to first learn ashtanga yoga and the vinyasa style of yoga differently before attempting ashtanga vinyasa yoga. The practice of ashtanga vinyasa yoga can become infinitely easier if you are already familiar with the movements of at least ashtanga yoga. In fact, if you are planning to perform ashtanga vinyasa yoga on your own, you should at least learn ashtanga yoga from an experienced trainer or practitioner.
