Yoga is an ancient discipline involving physical and mental exercises that originated in India more than 3000 years ago. Yoga makes use of ‘asanas’ or physical exercises and ‘pranayama’ or breathing techniques to keep your body and mind rejuvenated.

The body and mind need a good amount of rest to recuperate. In order to calm your body and mind before sleeping, a simple pose to begin with is Sukhasana. Sukhasana is a relaxation pose intended for meditation. For this pose, you need to sit down in a cross-legged position, place your hand on your hands, keep your back upright and shut your eyes. Try removing all negative thoughts from your mind and concentrate on having only peaceful thoughts. Make sure you are comfortable and wearing loose fitting clothing that does not constrict you.

While sitting in Sukhasana, you could try deep breathing exercises as well. This will keep your blood pressure and heart rate normal. Try chanting ‘Om’ as well while taking in deep breaths. The vibrations produced from this saying this word repeatedly are said to stimulate different body parts positively. Repeat this exercise for at least 15 minutes.

Another exercise you could try includes Balasana or the child pose. In this pose, you need kneel down and bend your entire body down such that your forehead touches the ground. Extend your arms forwards and backwards. This exercise helps relieve any stress and fatigue you might have and also slows down your metabolism rate.

Other exercises include simple hand and leg raises while you are lying down. A simple change of exercise is raising your hands and legs alternatively. These light exercises relax your hand and leg muscles particularly your shoulders and thighs. Added to that, the digestive system and excretory system are stimulated, improving their functioning.

The last exercise intended for relaxation is Shavasana or the corpse pose. Although deceptively easy, it is actually quite hard to master. Lie down on your back and spread your limb. Hold the pose for several minutes. This pose is said to increase your awareness of your body and makes you conscious of your spiritual centre, such that it positively affects your mind and emotions. If performed correctly, this exercise can improve also memory and concentration levels.

Thus, these simple exercises help improve the state of both your body and mind.
