Yoga And Physical Exercises

Yoga can be effectively combined with other forms of physical exercises. The yoga asanas or poses are slow and gentle, and are easily adaptable to suit different persons or situations according to their needs. Besides, Yoga is not just about the body, but also about the mind. Its combination of postures, breathing and meditation bring strength, relaxation and flexibility to the body as well as the mind. You can practice yoga on its own or combine some of the postures or breathing techniques with other forms of exercises, depending upon your personal needs.

Yoga with Cardio: Many individuals combine a cardio workout with yoga poses. The cardio exercises strengthen the heart, blood vessels and lungs. Certain yoga exercises have the same effect, while also increasing flexibility and stamina. Thus the two complement each other.

Yoga with Weights: Weights are good for increasing muscle strength. But weight trainers sometimes suffer from rigidity of the muscles or muscles spasms. Doing yoga stretches before the weight training program, helps to stretch, strengthen and warm up all the muscles of the body, thus reducing your risk of injury while lifting weights. They also help to maintain the flexibility of the muscles. Thus lifting weights is easier and less painful.

During weight training or after any heavy exercise, uric acid builds up in the muscles, leading to a burning sensation while passing urine. It also causes a sense of discomfort and aches in various muscles of the body. Yoga also helps to flush out these and other toxins from the body.

The exercises of yoga can be done at various intervals. You may start with a few stretches, and then perform a few weight lifts. Usually the pattern of weight lifting is to perform sets of weight lifting exercises, and repeat them three to five times, with rest periods in between. The yoga exercises can be performed when you are resting between weight lifts. Lastly, you can end with a few yoga postures which will relax the body and the mind.

Yoga with Pilates: Pilates is a slow form of exercise, which develops the body’s flexibility and core strength. Yoga too has a similar aim and increases flexibility, strength and stamina. Both forms of exercise also help to create a better sense of balance for the body. The two forms of exercises can therefore be combined very well and benefit you physically and mentally.

Instead of pitching the two forms of exercise against each other as rivals, you can join them together into a strong and effective team.

How to combine: You can combine the two forms of exercise on a single day, or perform them on alternate days. You can also start your exercises with a few yoga postures, sun salutations and pranayamas (breathing techniques) and then proceed to do your conventional exercises.

However, do not over-do any exercise regimen. If you feel any discomfort or pain, stop immediately, and seek the advice of a doctor or an expert.

Also consume a sufficiently nutritious diet to supplement your physical work-outs.
