Importance of joy in daily yoga exercises and meditation
No practice or discipline comes naturally to us. Likewise, the practice of yoga exercises and meditation does not come naturally to most of us at first. Once it becomes a routine or we are habitualized to the practice, only then does it become a natural part of our lives. Getting into a routine however that we are not already familiar or comfortable with can be quite challenging. This is even harder if you do not enjoy what you are doing.
Yoga is an extremely demanding discipline that requires a great deal of physical stamina, balance, flexibility, and coordination, as well as self discipline, concentration and determination. Self motivation is most important and this can only come from taking joy in what you are doing. If you do not enjoy what you are doing and find yourself doing it forcefully it becomes harder to accomplish the task. For example, if you work at a job you do not like it becomes a lot harder to excel at it and cope with its demands, as compared to when working on a task that you enjoy doing, no matter how demanding.
Yoga is a lot more than a physical fitness regime, and therefore requires a lot more than mere will power. This does not mean that will power is something trivial, simply that it is alone not sufficient. Yoga is a lifestyle that addresses your physical health, mental health, and spiritual well being. As great as its scope is, when considering the positive effects or benefits of yoga, is its variety and application. There are a variety of physical postures and exercises, breathing techniques, styles of meditation and sequences. There are also different schools of yoga that emphasize different areas of the discipline, and take different approaches towards their varying goals. Yoga being a very personal discipline it is important that you cultivate your own personal discipline, to not only derive the maximum benefits, but also to get the most satisfaction and joy out of your experience.
In order to take joy in your yoga activities it is therefore necessary for you to choose the ideal form of yoga and instructor:
- Before you engage in yoga consult with both practitioners and instructors, and do your own research to decide which form of yoga is best suited with you.
- Find out about the different yoga classes or studios in your area to find one best suited for you.
- Choose an instructor who you are comfortable with and who can guide you towards building your own personal practice.
- Dress appropriately and use any needed accessories to make your yoga experience more comfortable.
- Have patience and do not try to treat it as a competitive discipline.
- Try and make your yoga experience more fun, by playing some soft soothing music of your choice during practice, and by modifying your environment to please your sense.
