Kidney stone, medically known as Urolithiasis, is a painful disorder of the urinary tract. These stones are generally made up of uric acid, calcium, cystine, or struvite. Kidney stones are caused when the small bowel absorbs excessive amounts of calcium, or you have intestinal problems or a urinary tract infection. It can also happen if your intake of fluids is very low or if you’re not exercising enough. If you feel excruciating pain in the buttocks, nausea, abdominal pain, fever and chills, pain in the genital area or you’re constantly moving to relieve the pain, then you need to consult a doctor. Some Yoga Asanas/Postures And Natural Remedies

Yoga: The cleansing technique, Shanka Prakshalana, can help to remove kidney stones. “Shankha” means conch, while “prakshalana” means to wash away. In this yoga technique, shankha denotes the alimentary canal, from the mouth to the anus. So, Shanka Prakshalana cleanses the entire system. You can also do yoga poses such as uttanpadasana (raised-feet posture), pavanmuktasana (wind removing pose), bhujangasana (cobra position), dhanurasana (bow pose), and halasana (plough pose) that help to treat kidney stones.

Food: Kidney beans are supposed to be a good remedy for kidney stones. You can cook a pot of kidney beans and eat it with rice. Celery is another vegetable that helps dissolve kidney stones as well as gall bladder stones. Ayurveda prescribes Holy basil for treating this problem – make a decoction with the leaves or just chew some leaves every day. The seeds of sweet or sour pomegranates can be made into a fine paste and a tablespoon of this paste can be mixed into a cup full of horse gram soup. This mixture is said to dissolve kidney stones. Watermelon, a fruit that is rich in potassium salts and has the highest concentration of water, is said to be one of the best diuretics to heal kidney stones. You should also include Vitamin E and Vitamin B6 in your diet.

What you should avoid: If you have kidney stones, then you should avoid alcoholic beverages as well as beverages like coffee, tea and carbonated drinks. You should also avoid acidic food as it may cause irritation in the urinary tract. Foods like spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, radish and pickles are some of the other irritants that you should avoid. Non-vegetarian foods, especially red meat, should be avoided. You may also want to strike out foods rich in calcium and phosphate from your diet. So, restrict your intake of whole wheat flour, dairy milk products, carrots, cabbages, coconuts and peas. You should have a low protein diet as too much of protein will only aggravate the problem. Last but not the least, drink lots of water to flush out the kidney stones.
