Yoga And Meditation Similarities

Yoga meditation is practical or theory ?

When we arrive at the decision to take up yoga or to take up meditation through the discipline of yoga, it is a decision made in the pursuit of inner peace and serenity. Yet this decision raises other issues and presents us with confusing and seemingly conflicting decisions stemming from the multitude of options available. It is imperative that you sift through the information to form your own opinions and arrive at a decision about which form of yoga is best suited for you. Yoga meditation not grounded firmly can be impractical and strictly theoretical. A certified yoga instructor would be able to guide you towards a personal yoga practice formulated for your specific needs.

There are different types of yoga, but all of them share certain elements. The focus in any yoga session is on asanas or physical postures, pranayams or breath techniques, and meditation. All of these are interdependent and are of equal importance. Yoga and meditation have come to be almost synonoymous and no matter what your focus, whether on meditation or learning yoga – both are very personal. It is therefore of the utmost importance that you develop your own personal practice once you have gained enough knowledge and expertise to do so. Just as there are different types of yoga there are also different types of meditation such as insight meditation, goal oriented meditation, or meditation in motion.

But before you get even more confused it would be best to introduce you to two methods or techniques of meditation. Try these out once you are familiar with the basics of yoga as both practices will help improve the other. Some of the yoga poses in your physical practice are also particularly conducive to and beneficial for meditation.

  • The Yoni Mudra technique is particularly useful for beginners and is a practice of withdrawal of the senses. In this practice you use your thumbs to shut the ears, while the index fingers cover the eyes, the middle fingers close the nostrils, and the other fingers seal your lips. As you inhale and exhale gently release the middle fingers during meditation.
  • The other technique is category concentration. This technique will help prepare your mind for more advanced meditative techniques. As a beginner, keeping your mind focused on a single object can be extremely challenging, so this techniques gives your mind some freedom of movement but still demands and builds on concentration and attention.

These are just two techniques that you can employ, but there are a variety of others. As your yoga practice progresses and your sense of concentration and focus is strengthened you can explore other avenues of meditation. This will enable you to implement the theoretical knowledge you have in a practical manner.
