Kundalini Awakening Experience
Kundalini Yoga takes its name from the Sanskrit word Kundalini, which means ‘coiled up’. Its name itself therefore is an indicator of its central focus, which is the rousing of that deep rooted energy within us all at the lower end of the spine. This energy is believed to be in the form of a snake; coiled up and poised to strike. Kundalini Yoga is therefore regarded by many as being the most powerful and potent form of yoga. Practitioners of Kundalini Yoga strive to awaken this energy and send it up the spine to reach and energize the brain. Achieving this goal is believed to bring you an uplifting and inspiring level of ecstasy and awareness.
Like most other disciplines or schools of yoga, Kundalini Yoga also makes use of Yoga asanas or poses and meditation techniques in its activities, but the difference in the practice of this form of yoga is that there is a greater focus on the chanting of Mantras and pranayama or breath exercises.
Kundalini Chakra And Energy
There are believed to be different Chakras in the body, which are centers of consciousness. It is said that once the Kundalini or this serpentine energy is roused it travels through these different chakras. There are seven of these Chakras in all and when the energy passes through each Chakra it stimulates each one while passing through, providing a particular power or an experience upon stimulation. To better understand the discipline of Kundalini Yoga, you must be relatively well informed and aware about the nervous system and the spinal cord in particular, because these chakras are said to be present around this region of the body.
Here is how this Kundalini or inner coiled energy can be awakened:
- Through the practice of Asanas, Mantras, and Pranayama
- By concentration, focus and training of the mind
- Through the practice of yogic disciplines like Hatha Yoga or Hatha Vidya, Jnana Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga
- Through a lifestyle of selflessness and intellectual inquiry
- With the help of a guru
The role of the guru or mentor can not be stressed enough. This is in fact the most important of the above mentioned methods. According to practitioners awakening your Kundalini forcefully can be extremely dangerous in the absence of any guidance or aid from a guru. Apparently, it can result in symptoms like:
- Disorientation and mental confusion
- Mild to severe headaches or a heavy headed feeling
- Psychosis
- The experience of intense and inexplicable mood swings
- Epilepsy or other involuntary body movements
- Stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression
- Changes in breathing patter or rather irregular breathing
- A sudden change in character with a leaning towards immoral behavior
