What Is Corpse Pose And How Is It Beneficial

In Corpse Pose one lies on his back, completely motionless, with mind and body totally relaxed. The technique of this posture is –

  • Lie on your back with legs stretched out and slightly apart.
  • Keep your arms slightly away from the side of the body, palms facing upward
  • Close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply.
  • Consciously relax each and every part of the body – the feet, calves, knees, thighs, abdomen, hips, hands, shoulders, neck, head and face.
  • Close your mind and forget all external thoughts.
  • Breathe normally and rhythmically with full awareness until you consciously immobilize your mind and lose consciousness of your body.
  • Slowly be aware of all body parts and open the eyes gently.

The best way to practice this pose is to ensure that your surrounding is quiet so that there is no external distraction.  The room should be semi dark and at no cost you should practice in glaring lights as that will defeat the purpose of this yoga pose.  While lying on your back, do not fidget or move any of the limbs or change position.  Allow your body to remain inert and let each part and organ of your body function normally.

The Corpse pose should be practiced for minimum 10 minutes to get the requisite result.  Your regular practice of yoga poses should end with the Corpse Pose.  You can also perform this to calm your nerves when you are tensed or fatigued at any time of the day provided your stomach is not full.
