Walking is an effective method of exercise for people of all ages. The weight of the body implies that there is effort needed to transport it that is generated while walking. Walking can be a pleasurable activity as well; many people like to walk as a means to relax their minds. Walking allows the body to spend some of its unused energy. A long walk also makes sure that the heart and lungs function at a higher rate than normal. These vital organs are therefore given a little bit of a workout while walking.
Walking can be conducted in a sensible manner in order to achieve the desired results. This means that a person can walk slowly or fast and for short distances or long distances depending on how much exercise is desired. This makes walking particularly useful as it can be moderated to suit the situation, either increased or decreased depending on the demands of the individual.
There is typically only one important piece of equipment when it comes to walking and that is the correct pair of shoes. Shoes play an important role as they make the walk comfortable and also allow the walk to be extended over a longer duration. There is not much difference between walking shoes for women and men as the requirements are the same. There are just minor variations depending on weight, body structure and age.
When selecting walking shoes for women, one must select the shoes that are appropriate for the woman in question. Some people suffer from deformities such as flat feet or raised arches and the shoes must be bought to match. Care should be taken to avoid heavy shoes as these will tire the walker out unnecessarily. Padding is another important factor for women, particularly those over the age of 45. Women tend to be more susceptible to arthritis and osteoporosis. These are conditions sometimes associated with hormonal deficiencies which are common in post-menopausal women. Such women benefit from softer soled shoes as they allow the strain of walking to be cushioned to some extent. One should avoid extremely soft soles though. The reason for this is that the softness of the sole may actually increase the effort required for walking if the sole absorbs the energy of the foot that is pressing down in order to make a step. The best shoe is therefore one that is moderately soft and that fits the foot properly. When purchasing a shoe, it should be tried by walking around for a couple of minutes. This ensures that the shoe fits properly and allows the feet to walk comfortably.
