Go Walking

It is a well known fact that walking is a great form of exercise for almost all people, regardless of their age, gender or location. It is a low impact activity and there are several health benefits that have been associated with it. Walking can help you in preventing or delaying serious conditions like diabetes, strokes, heart problems, dementia, blood pressure, Parkinson’s and osteoporosis, among others. Moreover, walking is excellent for weight loss, which can help you look good and at the same time, feel great about yourself. Moreover, the only requirements for walking are time, a walking trail and a good pair of walking shoes. However, before you decide to go walking, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

  • The shoes that you wear when you go walking should be comfortable and should preferably have soles that are skid-proof. It may take a few days or even weeks to break into new walking shoes.
  • Start off slowly, making sure that your first few walks are short, easy and pleasant, mainly so that you do not get tired and discouraged right at the beginning.
  • Every walking session should start with stretching exercises, then move on to a 10-minute warm up session, followed by a brisk walk and should finally end with a 10-minute cool down session. In the beginning, you can walk for around 30 to 40 minutes and gradually, move to a longer walking schedule.
  • Assess the weather before getting dressed for your walk. During summers, shorts and a loose t-shirt are most appropriate. In case you are going running during the winter, it may be wiser to wear warm track pants with a t-shirt. A jacket, can help keep the cold away, but can be removed as it gets warmer. The right socks are an important part of dressing appropriately for walking; therefore you need to wear socks that absorb the perspiration from your feet while you run.
  • Activities like walking, jogging or running can be much more fun, if you have a companion along with you. It may not always be possible to find another person to walk with you and therefore it is quite common to see dogs go walking with their owners. This keeps pet owners motivated, builds a bond between the owner and the pet and is a great way of getting the dogs to exercise too.

Before you decide to go running or walking it is best to check with a doctor especially if you suffer from any existing medical conditions.
