Elliptical workouts tend to be different from treadmill workouts with respect to amount of calories burnt, intensity of the workout and also the impact that is experienced by the knees and the other joints of the body. By using an elliptical machine the calories burned are more vs. the calories burned by working out on a treadmill. This is because the elliptical trainer tends to work out both the upper and lower body simultaneously which in turn increases the heart rate of the individual faster than that on a treadmill thereby resulting in more calories burned and consequently more weight loss by using an elliptical machine.
The elliptical trainer tends to result in more weight loss and a more proportionate weight loss as it tends to work ones back, shoulders, legs, arms and chest thereby resulting in a total body workout which results in more calories being burned. In most people it has been observed that working out on a treadmill or on an elliptical machine tends to result in a similar amount of calories being burned however the major difference being that by working out on the elliptical machine one has a lower risk of injuring ones knees, hips or ankles. A typical elliptical machine tends to work the upper body of the individual as well which the treadmill does not do. This is possible because as the feet of the individual go through their elliptical motion, the action of the hands gripping the moving handlebars tends to exercise the arms as well resulting in more calories being burned on account of the upper body workout.
Most people who are on a weight loss program are recommended to use the elliptical trainer as they will not only burn some extra calories as compared to the treadmill but also get a more efficient exercise in less time. Before taking up any weight loss program that involves the use of the elliptical trainer or the treadmill, one should always consult their doctor and check on their fitness levels and medical records.
