Yoga For Depression

- Start your sessions with a few rounds of Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutation) with synchronized breathing
- Halasana (Plough Pose), Matsyasana (Fish Pose), Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand), Supta Vajrasana (Supine Warrior Pose) and Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall Inverted Pose). These should be done together with standing Yoga poses such as Padahastasana (Hands to Feet Pose), Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) and Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose I), Ardha Chakrasana (Crescent Moon Pose) and Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Ushtrasana (Camel Pose). You may have to take the help of your Yoga teacher if you find it difficult to hold these Yoga poses in the beginning. If you are to derive the most out of these Yoga asanas, you should be holding the Yoga postures for a little while at least.
2. Pranayama (breathing practices) have proven extremely beneficial to all, in particular people suffering from mild to acute depression. For this reason a lot of different styles of breathing. The ones best for you are Kapalabhati (Skull Cleansing) and Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breathing). These are also very easy and you should do them together with Yogasanas if you are to achieve optimum results.
3. OM chanting together with breath meditation has proven highly effective as therapeutic tools on people suffering from psychosomatic problems and depression. Please find a good meditation instructor, tell him or her about your problem in confidence and do some meditation under the instructor’s guidance, preferably in an ashram or Yoga center close to your residence or workplace.
4. The problem with depression is that the mind is stuck in one groove. As a result, the same negative thoughts keep playing over and over. Once you’ve overcome these negative feeling or thoughts with the practice of Yoga, you’ll be amazed how beautiful life is.
