Discolored Skin Remedies – Homemade Treatments For Elbow And Knee

Why Elbow And Knee Skin Get Discolored

To begin with it is important to note that dark skinned elbows are not caused due to any skin ailment. Elbows that are darkened and coarse are a common occurrence and are normally the result of the lack of hygiene or personal care and attention that they receive. Whilst our knees and elbows tend to attract more dirt and contaminants from our daily activities, incorrect sitting postures and leaning habits also contribute to their discoloration. Being a joint, there are many creases in the skin that gather together on the outer side of the elbow. Dust, sweat and grime have a tendency to get trapped in these creases, resulting in layers of dry skin on the exterior of the elbow which gives it the appearance of a dark coloration.

Home Remedies For Dark Skin

One of the simplest remedies is to take regular care of the affected area, which can be done trough the process of exfoliation. A mixture of coconut oil and walnut powder can be used to exfoliate the dead skin cells which will return the affected area of the skin to its normal level of softness and color. If the exfoliation results in a drier skin with feelings of itchiness, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist who could suggest a steroidal application for the affected area. The application of a medicated ointment should result in the softening of the skin allowing you to revert to the exfoliation. One of the best natural remedies—a sliver of lemon can be used to massage the affected area.  The juice of the lemon which has naturally occurring bleaching agents is useful in reducing the dark pigmentation marks present on the affected skin. To bring back the normal coloration of the skin, apply a mix of vinegar and yogurt to the affected area, this remedy has been found to be helpful. Another of nature’s powerhouse remedies is honey. The affected area can be moisturized and softened by applying some honey about ten minutes before taking a shower. It is beneficial to use honey regularly as it also has excellent emollient qualities.

Skin cells need to be hydrated internally and a regular high intake of water or juices is always recommended. Always ensure a good sitting posture and avoid excessive leaning on the elbows. Use an appropriate sunscreen to protect the elbows from the sun as well as a good moisturizing cream to keep the skin of the elbow soft and supple at all times. Over the counter creams are also effective in reducing the dark pigmentation of the skin.
