Running is a simple and popular exercise sport that is used to lose weight, build up muscle and build up stamina. Running is accessible to everyone because it only requires a route to be available for running. Running can cause injury to the individual. Most injuries are related to long term wear and tear of parts of the legs. Most individuals run on hard ground. The use of softly padded running shoes does help to dissipate some of the energy that is generated with every foot fall. However, the shock from this foot fall does pass into the leg. The joints in the lower leg are therefore susceptible to runners’ injuries. The ankle joint is exposed to a lot of stress when an individual is running. Some of this energy passes up the leg into the knee joint which can also be affected badly.
Runners’ injuries are not restricted to wear and tear related injuries. Some runners may suffer from injury because of an abnormal force that has been applied to their joints. If an individual is running on broken ground, there is a possibility that the ankle will get twisted or bent in an abnormal direction. In its normal straight position, the ankle is capable of absorbing a lot of force. However, when the ankle is twisted, the force is applied to the ligaments and tendons that are being stretched the most. This can cause them to tear or be ruptured. This type of ankle injury is more serious than a simple wear and tear injury.
The knee is also susceptible to twisting and wear and tear injuries. Tendonitis is a condition where the tendons become painful because they are inflamed due to stretching or twisting. Knee injuries often take many months to heal properly.
Apart from the ankle and the knee, the hip joint and the foot may also be injured during running. The hip joint connects the top of the leg to the body. It carries the weight of the body and can be affected by runners’ injuries. Bursitis is a common problem associated with the hip joint. This can cause severe pain as the bursa is inflamed within the joint. This causes pain during practically any movement.
There are many other injuries that can affect an individual’s leg while running. One should consult with a doctor on the possible injuries and on the methods that can be used to avoid such injuries.
