Jaundice Causes And Symptoms - Bilirubin
Jaundice is a result of elevated levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream. Bilirubin is a pigment that is yellowish in color and is formed due to the breakdown of hemoglobin and red blood cells. The bloodstream carries the bilirubin to the liver, where it is processed and then excreted through the bile. Liver damage or disease, disruptions in the metabolism of bilirubin due to genetic factors, problems in the excretion of bile and a higher level of red blood cell breakdown can cause jaundice. Jaundice is characterized by the appearance of a yellowish tinge on the skin, the white areas of the eyes and in the urine. The degree of the yellow color depends upon the bilirubin content in the blood. Mild cases of jaundice will result in a slight yellowing, but in more serious cases, the color can even turn into a darkish brown.
What Is Jaundice
Jaundice is also most commonly accompanied by an itching sensation that can become quite severe in some cases. Jaundice is not really a disease by itself, but rather a result of other underlying conditions. If the cause is liver disease, there may also be cirrhosis of the liver, accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, fatigue, swelling in the legs, bleeding in the intestines and coma. The jaundice may also be a result of bile duct blockage. This does not allow the flow of bile into the intestine and as such there is improper digestion of fat. The bile is also responsible for the release of vitamins into the body. If the bile functioning is disrupted, vitamin deficiencies can also occur.

An effective home remedy for jaundice is to consume a paste of honey and a paste of papaya leaves. Barley water is also a very well known remedy that is effective in curing jaundice. You can make a paste out of about fifteen basil leaves. Dissolve the paste into a glass of fresh radish juice and drink this daily for a couple of weeks. Gooseberry is effective in treating jaundice as it is rich in vitamin C. You can even consume lemon juice daily to increase consumption of vitamin C. Sugar cane juice is another popular remedy that is believed to be quite effective against jaundice. Drinking a glass of sugar cane juice twice daily will prove to be beneficial. Taking a glass of warm water to which a pinch of turmeric has been added will also work well to treat the jaundice. The chicory plant is very useful in cases of jaundice as its roots, seeds and flowers can all be used in treating liver conditions.
