What Is a tapeworm

Cestoda is a category of epenthetic or bloodsucking platyhelminths, commonly referred to as tapeworms. These worms can enter the digestive tract through various methods including food. One form of tapeworm known as the taenia saginata, or the beef tapeworm, is known to grow up to 12 meters long while other species are believed to grow to over 30 meters.

Some of the most common type of tapeworms in humans comes from pork -Taenia solium, beef - Taenia saginata, and raw fresh water fish - Diphyllobothrium latum.  Infections caused due to pork and beef tapeworms are known as taeniasis. Tapeworm infections usually take place when tapeworm eggs are ingested through food, water or soil polluted with human or animal fecal matter. Consuming unhygienic food or undercooked food stored in unhygienic conditions tends to breed tapeworm larvae and usually finds their way into humans through the ingestion of contaminated foods.

Tapeworm Symptoms

Once the larva latches onto the digestive tract, the worm can grow into a very large adult tapeworm. Most tapeworm larvae induce symptoms in the host, before they can grow into adults. One such example is cysticercosis, which is a disease among humans caused due to the larval tapeworms in the body.

Tapeworm Infection

One can also contract tapeworm infection through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat that has larval tapeworm in it. Tapeworms in the human body tend to bind themselves to the intestinal walls, where they cause discomfort and inflammation; while some may continue to stay in the intestines others may exit the body through the stool. Specific circumstances put some people to a greater risk of tapeworm infections than others, through:

  • Poor sanitary practices. Occasional rinsing and bathing that can enhance the risk of contaminated matter to the mouth.
  • Constantly administering to farm animals. Improper disposal of human and animal faeces can cause tapeworm infestations amongst other infections.
  • Regular travel to places with poor sanitary practices.
  • Consuming stale or undercooked meats. Undercooking meats does not destroy tapeworm eggs and larvae meats that have been contaminated.

Tapeworm Treatment And Remedies

If one suspects a tapeworm infection it can be detected by checking the stools for telltale signs of adult tapeworms. A visit to the pathology department with stool samples can be checked for larvae remains or tapeworm sections in the feces. If your doctor suspects tissue-invasive infections, you may have to undergo blood tests that check for the presence of certain antibodies the body produces to combat against tapeworm infections. The existence of these antibodies in the blood suggests tapeworm infestation. Sometimes doctors also recommend specific types of imaging, such as CT scans or magnetic resonance imaging scans for a more accurate diagnosis. Please seek immediate medical attention if you believe you have had food or water that has been contaminated by tapeworm.
