Tooth Enamel: Advice On Tooth Enamel Restoration And Treatment

Advice to restore tooth enamel: How do I restore my tooth enamel?

Tooth enamel is a substance that is, molecularly speaking, crystallized calcium phosphate. Enamel is created in the body through a process called amelogenesis. This process begins at the fetal stage of development and by the time a child is ten months old, the process of enamel creation is complete. By the age of six, the milk teeth of a child are shed and permanent teeth then appear after dissolving the roots of the milk teeth. This is the last change that happens to teeth and there is no growth beyond this point. So to answer your question on the restoration of tooth enamel, the answer is that enamel can never be regenerated.

In fact, tooth enamel is lost in minute quantities everyday as a normal process of wear and tear. This process is sometimes sped up by factors like the acid levels in the mouth – which is usually altered by the amount and frequency of sugar consumption, injury and tooth decay.  The only way to reduce the heavy wear that occurs with everyday eating is the use of fluoride. This is a substance that exists in most toothpaste and protects the teeth from tooth decay. The natural process of enamel attrition in the mouth occurs because of grinding down of the enamel and in a lot of cases, sugar consumption. When sugar is consumed, the bacterial flora in the mouth produces acids, as a result of bacterial consumption of coatings of sugar in the mouth. These acids then go on to attack the enamel. Over time and frequency of this sugar consumption, the enamel can be worn away to such an extent that the bacteria can attack the flesh inside the tooth.

In most cases of injury to the tooth, dentists are able to rectify missing areas of the tooth by substitutes for enamel. Dental sealant is a substance that is used in most dental surgeries to fill up areas of the tooth that were operated on. It is also used for cosmetically altering the appearance of teeth in the case of chipped teeth. The dental sealant application is a very simple procedure and the only challenge being the aesthetic one in matching the correct shape of the tooth. You should consider this as a treatment option after a complete dental check up to ensure that there is no further damage to the tooth. The use of sealant is also long lasting and should work effectively for five years at least.
