Swelling In Legs | Feet | Eyelids: Natural Edema Causes And Treatment

I have had swelling in legs, feet and eyelids, I haven’t been diagnosed with high blood pressure, what could be the reason?

If you do not suffer from high blood pressure, the other possibility for the swelling could be edema (also called oedema), which occurs because of fluid retention in the body. When serous fluids accumulate in the cells or cavities of the body, it causes swelling mostly in the lower parts of the body, for instance, feet and ankles. Edema is actually not a disease but an indication of some other underlying medical problem. And, it can have several harmful effects on one’s health. Not only is it a painful problem but it also hampers blood circulation, slows down the healing process, and may also result in skin infections. There are various causes for edema to afflict someone. It’s mostly diseases of the vital organs like the heart, the liver, and kidneys that cause edema. Other than those, anemia, low levels of protein in the blood, and malnutrition also cause edema. The problem is also associated with thyroid disease, varicose veins, pregnancy, immobility, and certain medications. So, you first need to find out if you suffer from any of these problems. However, since it’s been only two days, maybe you will be fine on your own. Sometimes edema can affect a perfectly healthy person too and get cured soon. Or, heat or hot weather could also be responsible for the swelling in your case.

Treatment For Edema

There are many ways to treat edema. Mustard is an effective treatment for edema. You can rub some warm mustard oil on the affected parts or apply a solution made by soaking two teaspoons of mustard seeds in water. Applying apple cider vinegar is also helpful as it removes excess fluid in the body cells and cavities. Or, you can make a decoction by boiling about three tablespoons of coriander seeds in two cups of water on medium heat till the solution is reduced by half. Consume the solution then. There are a few things you need to avoid. Salt causes water retention and carbohydrate has high water content. Fruits and vegetables also increase the amount of water in the body. You also need to increase your consumption of protein and fats. A regular regime of exercise is also important to get rid of excessive fluid in body cells and cavities. Smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages also aggravates the problem. To reduce the swelling in your legs, you can stretch them out on a table and raise them a little with a pillow.
