A sty is one of the most common eye infections. It occurs when the gland of the eyelid becomes infected. The sty usually appears on the outer edge of the eyelid. Although a sty will not harm your eyesight, it is nevertheless, extremely irritating. A sty usually disappears within two weeks. If the sty stays for longer than this period, you should consult a doctor.

Here are some tips and natural remedies that you can use to treat a sty:
- Avoid rubbing the sty, no matter how itchy it may be. If your hands are dirty then it could lead to a prolonged infection.
- Avoid exposing your eyes to too much of dust or sun. Wear shades if you have to go outside when it’s sunny or dusty.
- Go easy on those hours spent staring at a computer screen. You don’t want to add eyestrain to your kitty, when you’re already suffering from a sty.
- To ease the swelling, apply a warm, wet cloth to the sty. Do remember to wash and disinfect the cloth before further use.
- Wash your eyes with a mixture of one teaspoon of coriander seeds boiled in water.
- Alum can also be used to provide relief to your eyes. Simply mix two granules of alum in a glass of water and wash your eyes with it.
- Another easy home remedy for sties is to wet tea bags and place them over your eyes. Leave the tea bags on for 10 minutes several times a day, for prompt relief.
- Turmeric is also a great way to get prompt relief from the sty. Boil a teaspoon of turmeric in two cups of water. Filter the water through a fine cloth to remove any granules of turmeric. Apply this water as an eye drop two to three times a day.
- Soak a clove in water and apply it to the infected eye to obtain relief from the pain.
- Rub some castor oil on the lash line.
- Cayenne extract is also a good home remedy for sties. Simply apply the extract on the sty with a clean cotton swab.
- A poultice made of grated potatoes should be applied on the affected eye and left overnight.
- Although the sty may seem just like any other pimple, resist the urge to pop it. You may end up causing some real damage to your eyes.
