A kinked or sprained neck is a common injury and is a result of overexerting the muscles in the neck. A sprained neck can be caused due to poor posture at work, holding the neck in one position for a long time, violent and sudden jolts to the neck, using a mattress that is too soft to sleep which causes a faulty neck posture while sleeping. Avoid these situations to prevent a kinked neck and remember that acute stress and anxiety is another contributing factor. If your muscles in any part of the body are tense, the blood circulation to the area reduces drastically, resulting in pain. It is imperative that you change your posture if this is the problem and allow your body to rest and heal completely before starting on work. A hot compress applied to the area will improve circulation and reduce the pain. Keep the bottle there for half an hour when the spasm is at its worst. But occasionally it may require a realignment of nerves in the neck and this should under no circumstances be done at home and will require medical attention. Once it has healed you may try simple neck exercises on a daily basis. Rotate your neck in clockwise and anticlockwise directions around ten times. Stretch your head upwards and downwards and turn slowly from the left to the right and from the right to the left to ease the pain and reduce the tension in the muscles. This last exercise may be followed when you are partially healed.

Make a poultice out of crushed cloves and apply onto the kinked region before going to bed. The oil from the cloves is an excellent remedy for pains, aches and cramps. Take a little dry ginger powder and mix with the pulp from freshly crushed ginger. Add a little water to it and once it has the consistency of a fine paste, apply onto the neck. Ginger is known for its properties as a painkiller and should give you relief in some time. Some doctors suggest an ice pack in case there is inflammation so that it can be brought down. Never apply the ice directly to your skin, rather put the crushed ice into a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel before placing it on the affected area. Place it for about 15-20 minutes and then take a one hour break and repeat the procedure. Consult your physician if there is no relief and about using a hot water bottle or icepack depending on your condition.
