Menstruation is a natural process and occurs when a girl hits puberty. It is a natural occurrence that happens every twenty eight to thirty days depending from person to person. During this process, the eggs present in a woman’s reproductive system ovulate and eventually if not fertilized disintegrate. Generally the period for which a woman menstruates varies depending on various biological factors but in some women this can be a long and painful experience.  Most women have a period that on an average lasts for a week. Sometimes however this gets extended resulting in prolonged bleeding and this can cause immense discomfort and weakness. In medical terms when this happens it called menorrhagia. Women who haven’t started ovulating regularly, especially younger women, are most prone to experience such prolonged periods. But the good news is that this will generally happen within the first year of your first menstrual period.

This situation generally causes a lot of weakness as there is a heavy bleeding. One may even experience severe stomach cramps, back aches etc . Causes for this situation vary from hormonal imbalances, thyroid gland dysfunctions, certain kinds of medication, high amounts of stress, change in diet, excessive physical stress and sometimes it could be just heredity factors at play. However, if one bleeds excessively during an extended period it is advisable to consult your doctor as you might need more than just home remedies.

One of the easiest ways of combating the stress and discomfort caused by a prolonged period is to get enough rest. As simple as it sounds physical strain and stress can add a lot to worsen the   situation. Maintain a healthy diet. It is advisable to start altering your diet and making these changes about two weeks before your period. Consuming a lot whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies is a good idea. Avoid artificial foods that contain lots of preservatives or junk food that contains saturated fats. Regulating your intake of salt can do wonders too. If you are troubled by long and painful periods reduce, at least during your period, your intake of caffeine, alcohol and sugar. Some studies have shown that women who consume lots of alcohol experience more cramps and heavier bleeding during their period. Eat iron rich foods and you should eat oysters, beef, pork, poultry products and fish. It is also essential to get regular exercise. It has been observed that women who went to the gym regularly had periods that were regular and less painful. A study also revealed that having regular orgasms can help reduce the discomfort experienced during periods.
