There are certain risks that are associated with the administration of anesthesia and it is common for infections and other conditions to develop following surgery. However, pneumonia after surgery is a rare occurrence. Studies have shown that only one out of thousand individuals develop pneumonia after surgical procedures. The condition generally develops due to the quantity of anesthesia that is given to the patient. Infections that develop following a surgery would generally not be categorized as severe or fatal. However, conditions caused by chemicals should not be neglected. In spite of advances in technology and medical methods, the fact that post operative pneumonia still occurs is rather unfortunate. However, the important point to note here is that it is only the local anesthesia that is specifically administered in certain areas of the body that is associated with this condition. General anesthesia is not known to result in such infections.
Apart from pneumonia, other common conditions such as cold and cough could also result as a side effect to anesthesia. Certain infections of the lungs could also develop. In some cases, infections could develop in the respiratory tract. These are not common occurrences however. Infections occur after surgery only when there has been a poor handling of the chemicals. Mostly, the pneumonia that occurs after surgery is not too severe. Slight congestion may develop in the chest, accompanied by cough and cold. Mild fever may also occur. The individual may also feel a bit cold and the pulse rate may rise significantly. If, however, intense pain develops in the chest or if there is coughing up of dark colored sputum, it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately. If the individual is already under supervision, it is advisable to remain in the hospital until the condition is cured completely. If the symptoms are not examined immediately, they may become aggravated and complications could develop.
After a surgical procedure, the immune system of the individual is not as effective and if infections develop during this time, they may spread and become serious. As such remaining under medical supervision is recommended until the doctors confirm that the infection has been cured. It may be difficult to stay in post surgery care for longer periods of time due to the financial and personal consequences it involves. However, the most essential to remember is that nothing else is as important as one’s health. Therefore it is better to be cautious and take the necessary measures towards full recovery.
