What is coccydynia?

Coccydynia refers to a condition, in which a person could experience severe pain in the coccyx, more commonly known as the tailbone. This condition is also known as coccaglia, coccygeal pain and coccygodynia.

People usually go through severe coccyx pain or tailbone pain, while suffering from coccydynia. The coccyx or the tailbone is the last part of the spinal column, which is situated between the buttocks. Fortunately, the tailbone is located deep inside the body, which is probably why it is not very common to see a tailbone injury or any other type of tailbone trauma in people. However, there are some people who have prominent tailbones, which are a lot more vulnerable to injuries. This problem is a lot more common in women than it is in men. Hence, it is quite common to see lower back pain in women, caused by an injury to the tailbone.

Causes of coccyx bone pain

There could be several factors that lead to lower back bone pain, caused by coccydynia. People could suffer from pain in the buttocks for many reasons, which include sore gluteal muscles. In fact, many people feel that they are experiencing pain in their tailbone, when it is nothing more than pain in the lower back. This is because, only when pain in the buttock region is related to the coccyx, can it be recognized as tailbone pain.

It is quite possible for a tailbone injury to lead to tailbone fracture, a bruised tailbone, a broken tailbone or tailbone dislocation or even dislocation of the entire spinal column. All these conditions are bound to cause intense tailbone pain. Of course, other conditions, such as the presence of a tailbone cyst, tailbone tumor or a chronic itchy tailbone, can also lead to severe coccyx pain even without the presence of any injuries.

Most people who are suffering from coccydynia need to consult a doctor, so that they can undergo the appropriate tailbone pain treatment. However, before administering any form of treatment for coccydynia, medical health care providers need to conduct a few diagnostic tests, to identify the exact causes of coccyx bone pain. This is because coccydynia treatment may vary, based on the cause. For example, it is only natural for tailbone injury treatment to be completely different from the treatment of a tailbone tumor. Therefore, identifying the causes of tailbone pain is absolutely essential, before any form of treatment can be administered. Given below are some of the underlying conditions, which can lead to coccydynia:

Local Trauma:

One of the several causes of coccyx bone pain is excessive pressure or an injury directly to the tailbone. Such factors could cause the tailbone to move from their limited range of motion, which in turn leads to localized pain and an inflammation. If a person had a fall directly on the tailbone, it can injure the coccyx or could also cause an inflammation in the ligaments. This is believed to be the most common cause of severe tailbone pain in most people.

Pregnancy and childbirth:

It is a well known fact that women experience severe back pain when they are pregnant. However, not all women are aware of the fact that they could go through tailbone pain during early pregnancy too. This is because there is pressure on the tailbone during pregnancy, right from the first trimester on. There are several changes that take place within the woman’s body during the first trimester, to accommodate the growth and development of the baby, which increases the pressure on the tail bone.

However, as the pregnancy nears its final stages and the baby moves into the ideal position for delivery, there is additional pressure on the lower back. This is probably why tailbone pain in late pregnancy is also quite likely. It is possible for women to avoid tailbone pregnancy pain, by practicing certain exercises and getting up slowly after being seated for a long period of time.

During childbirth, a woman needs to apply a lot of pressure on the lower abdominal region, which could cause tailbone pain during pregnancy labor too. As the baby moves through the birthing canal, the coccyx may be moved back from its original position, damaging the joints. These factors can also lead to tailbone pain after pregnancy. Women go suffer tailbone injuries during pregnancy and childbirth may also experience severe tailbone pain when sitting, for a couple of months, after giving birth to their babies.

Excessive pressure:

There are certain activities that apply excessive pressure on the lower back and the tail bone and could also lead to chronic tail bone pain, of they are practiced regularly. Some of these activities commonly include horse riding or sitting on a hard surface for a couple of hours at a stretch. These activities do not always lead to chronic pain, as the symptoms can easily be controlled. Moreover, the activities that cause such problems need to be restricted as much as possible.

Tumors or infections:

Though rare, there is a possibility that a person could be suffering from coccydynia, because of a tumor or an infection that is present in the coccyx area.

Medical procedures:

In many cases, people have only suffered from severe coccyx pain after they undergo certain surgeries or medical procedures, which include a colonoscopy.

Other causes:

In case the tailbone pain is accompanied by other symptoms, such as abnormal vaginal bleeding or blood from the rectum, it is imperative to seek medical attentions without any delay. This is because there could be a correlation between tailbone pain and cancer too.

Coccydynia treatment

The treatment of this problem depends on the factors that cause it. However, most people prefer to opt for treatment methods which include pain relievers, injections and stool softeners. In some instances, doctors may advise patients to undergo a surgery, for treating the problem. However, in addition to medication, it is also important to follow adequate home care measures. Since this condition can turn serious, if not handled correctly, it is absolutely essential to have a doctor monitor all cases of coccydynia carefully.

Pain in the tailbone area can be effectively controlled through various therapies. But you must address the underlying condition causing the pain. An unstable coccyx or the tailbone can cause far more damage than you would know, and neglecting the primary cause of the pain could give rise to various complications.

What is  Coccyx- Coccydynia Treatment

Tail bone pain is also referred to as coccydynia and is a somewhat uncommon and poorly understood condition that can induce unrelenting low back pain. The pain from the tail bone area is akin to a localized dull ache at the very lower end of the backbone - the coccyx and patients generally complain of aggravated pain especially in seated conditions. Doctors believe that most causes of tail bone pain or coccydynia are unknown or idiopathic. Some reported causes include local trauma due to falls, childbearing among women, unnatural or unreasonable mobility of the tailbone, infectious conditions, tumor, or fracture.

Women tend to experience this condition more than men. Some of the causes of tail bone pain among women could be due to local injury, a fall or when giving birth. On uncommon occasions, an infectious condition or the presence of a tumor are also likely conditions for pain in the coccyx.

Lower Back Pain Therapy

Most forms of tail bone treatments are similar to lower back pain therapy. Traditional symptomatic treatment is usually the first attempt in treating the condition, with the hope that time will eventually heal the pain and resolve the issue. Some forms of therapy for tail bone pain include: chiropractic - a method of treatment that manipulates body structures to relieve low back pain, medications, physiotherapy and epidural injections among others.

Tailbone Pain treatment

If the doctor identifies the coccyx as the source of pain, various manual treatments can be applied by experts to treat the condition. Orthopedic medical experts introduce anti-inflammatory drug with the help of injections around the coccyx as treatment. In very rare cases, when none of the therapies show any positive outcome, doctors may also recommend surgery wherein the entire coccyx may have to be removed. Before opting for surgery, make sure that your surgeon has had plenty of domain experience.

Special products are also been designed for tail bone pain. These products are usually lifestyle remedies such as particular cushions, small ring-shaped seating buffers and the like, among other products that help to lighten the pressure of the tail bone when seated. These products are believed to make living with a tail bone pain condition far easier than otherwise, until a cure is determined.
