Kidney Infection -  Bladder Infection Causes

Kidney infections are part of the group of infections that affect the urinary system and are known as urinary tract infections. The urinary system is composed of the kidneys, urethra, bladder, and prostrate. Lower urinary tract infections affect the bladder, prostrate and urethra, while upper urinary tract infections affect the kidneys. The kidneys help in the regulation of blood pressure and in the production of blood cells. They also play an important role in removing the waste matter from the bloodstream. The blood flows into the kidneys through the renal arteries.  The kidneys possess small filters known as glomeruli, which remove the waste from the blood. This waste is part of the food that we consume. The kidneys remove the excess of minerals and salt from the blood. The filtered blood flows back to the heart, from where it circulates throughout the body. The waste matter goes out from the kidneys and remains in the bladder, until it is released through the urethra when urination occurs.

Urinary Tract Infection

Infections of the urinary tract are quite common and usually occur more frequently in women. Infections may develop in the urinary tract and the kidneys by bacteria that spread in the urine through the urethra. The bacteria can also enter the urinary tract through the anus and the vagina. Women are prone to these infections because the urethra is much shorter and thus more prone to attracting bacteria. Sexual intercourse may also pose a risk of urinary tract infections in women. Kidney infections result when the bacteria make their way up and enter the kidneys. Kidney stones may also increase the chances of urinary tract infections, as they obstruct the urine flow out of the kidneys.

Kidney Stones Home Remedies

One of the most popular ways of dealing with kidney and urinary tract infections naturally, is to consume plenty of cranberry juice. Cranberry juice prevents bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract linings and as such curbs the spread of the infection. It also makes the urine more acidic, thereby making it an uncomfortable environment for the bacteria to thrive. The juice must not be sweetened, however. Another anti-bacterial remedy is grape seed extract. One needs to drink plenty of water and other liquids in order to flush the infection causing bacteria out of the system. Alcohol and carbonated sugary drinks must be avoided. Green beans are also considered effective in dealing with kidney stones and infections. Basil juice mixed with honey may be consumed to strengthen the kidneys and improve functioning. Celery also helps to prevent kidney stones from forming, thus preventing kidney infections.
