Natural Cures For Jalapeno Pepper Skin Burn

By Patricia | April 14, 2010

Jalapenos are known for their warm and burning sensation when they are consumed. While chopping or cooking them, too, this Mexican vegetable can cause a burning sensation on the fingers because of the capsaicin present in it. It’s very important to take care of the hands while using the peppers. Wearing gloves while chopping and cooking them will prevent the burning sensation on the fingers. This is also because capsaicin is not water soluble and once the jalapeno comes in contact with the skin, remedies like washing hands with cold water, rubbing lime juice, or applying ice will provide only temporary relief.

Remedies For Jalapeno Burn

Jalapeno burns can be quite incapacitating because they often cause pain along with burning sensation and the symptoms can last up to 24 hours. So, the sooner the pain and burning are got rid of the better. One of the easiest ways of getting relief from jalapeno burns is applying rubbing alcohol or dipping the fingers in the product for a few minutes. If rubbing alcohol is not available, make a thick paste of milk and baking soda and apply it after immersing the fingers in cold milk for about five minutes. Let the milk and baking soda mix stay on the skin for 20 minutes and then scrub it off. This method will provide you considerable relief from the pain, though one may need to repeat this procedure about five times to get rid of the burning also completely. Another way of subsiding heat of jalapenos is moistening your hands in water and dipping them in baking soda or table salt.

Vegetable oil and bleach are good solvents of capsaicin. Apply vegetable oil, especially corn oil, on your hands before chopping jalapenos or to bring relief if your skin is already affected. Aloe vera is a popular product to get relief from most kinds of burns because of its soothing effects. Apply the pulp extracted from the leaves instead of using the bottled gel form. Unfortunately, this will only bring temporary relief. So, you can get immediate relief till you can make use of some elaborate treatment. If you can find toothpaste with aloe vera gel, applying it on jalapeno burns will also bring relief. Toothpaste has menthol, which works great on burning sensation. Applying hemorrhoids cream, if you have it at your disposal, also brings relief from the burning sensation. Also ensure that if your skin is burning, keep the hands away from your eyes, private parts, and broken skin.
