Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is only the removal of the uterus and does not really affect the mechanisms that cause vaginal infections. Though the vagina is shortened during a hysterectomy, the only possibility is that you have a regular case of bacterial vaginosis.
Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms And Treatment
The diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis requires a complete test, but for your reference, it is important to visit the doctor if you are experiencing a fishy odor from the vagina, and if there is a grayish-brown discharge after sexual intercourse, and the area appears inflamed. Another symptom is irregular menstruation, but since you have had a hysterectomy, an irregular period will not be one of your symptoms. You can also eliminate the possibility of any other sexually transmitted infections if the vaginal discharge is free of pus. If however, you are getting pus as vaginal discharge then you probably have a pelvic inflammatory disease like Chlamydia or gonorrhea. The list of sexually transmitted diseases is quite long so you must pay special attention to the color of the discharge. Bacterial vaginosis is proclaimed after a whiff test, in which chemicals are added to vaginal discharge and checked for fishy smells. In addition to this, a test for vaginal epithelial cells in the discharge and a culture is also taken to check for the presence of bacteria. If all these come back positive, then you will be prescribed antibiotics and the condition goes away pretty soon.
Bacterial Vaginosis Home Remedy
At home, you can try to get rid of this disease by increasing your intake of natural antibiotics in the form of garlic. Garlic contains the ingredient allacin and this works to kill bacteria and fungi successfully. Try to consume half a garlic worth of mashed garlic a day that is added to food or soup. Next, you should douche with some tea tree oil diluted in water. After this, clear the vagina with another clear water douche. Finally, soak a tampon in milk and leave it place for an hour before removing it. By doing all of these, you are disinfecting the vagina and repopulating it with the bacteria that are correct for the body, namely lactobacillus that is available in milk – therefore, the milk tampon. This should completely take care of the problem if used in consonance with the antibiotics given to you by the doctor. In the future, you must use a condom or let your partner know that he has to use one whenever intercourse takes place.
