Chalazion -  Eyelid Infections

A stye is an infection that develops in the hair follicles of the eyelashes. It appears as a small red bump on the inside or outside of the eyelids. The infection may be caused by staphylococcal bacteria. It can also result when the oil glands in the areas of the eyelashes or eyelids become clogged. Styes tend to appear during periods of stress. Styes may appear as red and swollen pimples which result in itching, tenderness, pain, watering of the eyes, and sensitivity to light, but they are actually quite harmless. Styes are sometimes confused with another condition that affects the eye, known as chalazions. Chalazions form as cysts inside or on the eyelids due to obstruction of the meibomian glands. Styes that develop on the eyelids tend to last for a longer time and usually cause more pain and tenderness, than those that occur on the eyelashes.
The initial symptoms of a stye include pain, tenderness and redness. Then the area round the stye begins to swell. It is common to experience irritation and light sensitivity when a stye occurs. Blinking of the eyes also results in pain and discomfort. As the stye develops, pus begins to form inside. The pain and other symptoms are alleviated once the stye breaks and the pus is drained.

Home Remedies For Styes Treatment

There are several beneficial home remedies that can be used to treat a stye. Tea bag eye treatments on the affected eye are an effective remedy for relieving the pain and swelling. Wet the tea bag first and then place it over the stye for about ten minutes. Sponging the affected area with a wash cloth dipped in warm water will help to bring down the swelling and also encourage the stye to rupture and drain the pus. The stye must not be squeezed in order to drain it, as this could result in further infection. You may also boil some coriander seeds in water and use the solution to rinse the eyes. Do this about three to five times a day for best results. Potato is also known to be beneficial in providing relief from styes. Make a paste of grated potato and place it in a clean wash cloth. Dab the cloth on the affected area for relief from inflammation and pain.  A compress made by placing warm guava leaves in a moist cloth also serves as a helpful remedy for painful styes.
