Dark Lips: Smoking Is Not Only Reason | Home Remedies For Dark Lips

Natural remedy for dark lips: Hi, I dont smoke (i may have smoked a total of 100 cigarettes) I have dark lips, particularly the upper one, could you provide natural remedy.

Your question actually breaks the myth that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of blackened lips and that people who have black lips are smokers or have indulged in smoking. The lips are basically like any other tissue in the body which has an external contact and the skin on the lips is just the same as the skin on your face, made up of the same epithelial tissue.

The darkening that is happening is a result of not giving the same attention to your lips as you would to your facial skin. Because of the delicate nature of the lips, we rarely exfoliate this area as religiously as we do the skin on the face and in fact the lips are rarely washed except after meals and a bath. Apart from petroleum jelly applications when they go dry, this part relies on the saliva in the mouth for most of its moisture. The reason that lips go dry is because of the only difference that they have from normal skin, which is the lack of sweat glands or sebaceous glands. This makes them prone to chapping and as you can sometimes notice in winter, cracking. The reason that lips turn black is because they are not exfoliated and new layers of skin just get accumulated below older ones. You would have noticed also that skin on the lips tends to come off in layers making peeling them off a bit dangerous because the skin could rip sensitive areas within as well. The way to exfoliate this skin is as follows: apply some lemon juice to you lips and let it absorb the juices. You will start feeling a mild burning sensation as the citric acid permeates into more sensitive layers of new skin. At this point, stop and then make your lips taut by opening your mouth, the with your finger rub along the lips. The action to be followed should be one similar to that of brushing one’s teeth. You will immediately start feeling some skin peel off. Continue doing this and reduce the pressure from your hand to your lips as you go deeper through the layer. Once this is done, wash you lips off and apply some petroleum jelly or a moisturizing cream.

As a regular practice and this is specifically to avoid the accumulation of toxins in the skin of your lips, make it a point to roll your lips into your mouth and massage them.
