Eyelid Cyst - Chalazion
It is rather common for one to experience a growth on either the lower or upper eyelid. This occurrence is medically known as a meibomian cyst or chalazion. While it may start out to resemble a stye in the eye, the condition is significantly different. A stye is the result of an infected sebaceous gland usually situated at the edge of an eyelid. Styes are known to burst in their own time and release a small amount of pus when doing so. Mebomian cyst’s, on the other hand, will appear to be slightly tender inflammations on the eyelid that occur as a result of one or more of the 30 meibomian glands present in the area getting blocked. These meibomian glands are responsible for the lubrication of the edge of the eyelid. Individuals that suffer from eyelid conditions such as blepharitis and skin conditions like acne or seborrhoeic dermatitis are more likely to suffer from this condition. If the obstructed gland has bacteria within it, the gland will become infected and would tend to resemble a pimple. The nodule will be similarly painful to touch. A significant amount of swelling will take place in the affected area, as a direct result of the continuous build up of secretions from the meibomian glands beneath the blockage. As a result of the lack of lubrication, the eye itself will also tend to become very red, swollen and painful.
Eye Cyst Treatment And Stye Remedy
Most eye cysts will usually tend to resolve themselves within a week and pose no real medical threat or lead to severe complications unless they are infected. There is definitely a risk of infection if bacteria – laden cyst were to burst so it is important to make sure that the initial treatment used is able to control this aspect of drainage. In a few cases where the cyst does not appear to heal by itself, surgery may be required. Bathing the cyst with a warm compress will do wonders in helping to bring down the swelling, and allow the cyst to gradually disappear. Try using the warm compress about four to five times a day for best results. If you suffer from chronic development of cysts, you should make an effort to prevent the clogging of glands by cleaning them on a daily basis. All that you need to do is soak a small ball of cotton in some warm water and apply it over a closed eyelid for a few minutes. Proceed to clean any grime or dirt from the edges of the lower eyelid and you will notice that, in a span of just two weeks time, your eyelids will look significantly cleaner.
