Flatulence farts, or passing wind, as they are more commonly known is caused by the action of bacteria in the human gut. Despite the obviously embarrassing situations that these can create, they are a sign of a healthy digestive tract. People who have suddenly lost the ability to do so are probably missing a significant amount of digestive bacteria in their intestines, which would lead to improper food absorption.

The process all begins in the small intestine. Almost all types of food will cause one to pass wind, so there are no dietary restrictions that can be imposed to solve this problem. The reason that flatulence smells bad is because of the presence of sulphides caused by the metabolism of proteins in the gut. Another reason also lies in the partial digestion of certain types of plant material. Plant material like polysaccharides and oligiosaccharides cannot be broken down by any other mechanism other than the action of bacteria, leading to the inevitable flatulence. The chemistry of the entailing wind is surprisingly benign with a large portion being Nitrogen, and the rest as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and the least prevalent being methane. Not all people can produce methane in their flatulence because it requires specific bacteria for the process. Curiously, swallowing air during the process of eating and swallowing saliva also greatly contributes to the flatulent pressure in the intestine.

There are some interesting additives to food that can be used to reduce or even eliminate the possibility of flatulence after a meal. Some of these are the use of cumin, coriander, turmeric, asafetida, epazote, and Kombu kelp. Beans, if they contribute significantly to your diet and to the problem at hand, should be soaked overnight so that they can be better digested. The bacterial make-up of your intestines is also important. With increased numbers of lactobacillus in the gut, the better that some tough polysaccharides are digested; therefore, consuming probiotic yoghurt once a day is a good practice. You also would have realized that there are certain types of food that make you prone to passing wind often, therefore it is a good idea to limit their consumption. It is also important to keep your intestines clear and excreting properly to avoid fecal matter remnants also being a contributing factor. When in a situation however, it will be just as fine to hold it in as well because due to gas diffusion, it will just end up in the bloodstream and exhaled – probably less potently.
