Excessive Ear Wax - Home remedy to remove ear wax: How to use ear wax oils?
Cerumen is the medical term used to describe ear wax. This is a particular type of secretion that is quite different from the sebum that is secreted from the sebaceous glands of the skin. Sebum is secreted by skin on other parts of the body and a typical example is on the end of the nose – the oiliest part. Ear wax, is a little tougher to deal with and sometimes doesn’t even come out with regular soap and water. An accumulation of ear wax over time can even impede hearing.
Though an excessive ear wax could cause impeded hearing, this doesn’t mean that it would be the case for everyone, and certainly does not present a case for using cotton swabs and ear buds. This is because cotton swabs and ear buds have been found quite wanting in terms of good results. Most of the times swabs and buds usually just end up pushing the ear wax even further inside the ear, exacerbating the problem even further. Worse still, improper use of these instruments could perforate the ear drum. Normally, the human body ejects old ear wax through the movement of the jaw. When the jaw moves down, the muscles and skin of the ear and also pulled and this dislodges ear wax that is old and dried out. To remove it artificially, as is usually done at a doctors office, the ear is irrigated and a flow of warm water is usually enough to get rid of the ear wax. This process is quite simple and can be done at home as well. Since the chemical composition of ear wax constitutes sterols, the most effective way of removing these is with a light oil medium – olive oil is one of the best candidates.
To try and de-wax at home, pour some warm olive oil into your ear. Simultaneously, move your jaw in a biting motion. Let the oil be for a few minutes and then drain out the oil. The next step is pour some soapy water into your ear, then shake your ear from the outside by pulling on the lobe in a circular motion and then drain this out as well. Finally, you need to stand under a shower and aim the jet of water into your ear. Make sure that the temperature of the water is warm and that the flow of the jet is not too hard. It should ideally feel like swabbing your ear. This should dislodge the remaining ear wax from your ear.
