Ear Clogging: Clogged Ear Drum And Wax

Clogging of the ears could indicate that your ears seem stuffed up from a pressure imbalance, have water in them, or that the ears seem to have an over-accumulation of ear wax or cerumen. Pressures imbalances can also occur during bouts of respiratory infections like sinusitis. Generally, ear wax is not a causative factor for a feeling of clogged ears. This is because the natural mechanism of earwax production causes older wax to be pushed forward towards the outer ear until it falls off. However, some people can find the wait a bit annoying and therefore wish to clean their ears out. Remember to never insert anything into your ear, as this can worsen the problem or a slip of the hand can cause perforation of the eardrum.

Ear Canal

Altitude and pressure changes can cause a clogging of your ears. While travelling in airplanes, the ears tend to get clogged due to the sudden changes in cabin pressure. To avoid this travel-related problem, you should keep chewing gum handy and chew on it all through the flight. This prevents the changes in air pressure from affecting the ear canal by slightly opening the tube connecting the middle ear to the throat. Forceful yawning is the best remedy to get rid of the clogging in your ears.  You can also consider swallowing your saliva forcefully and frequently to help ease the clogging from pressure differences. Another common remedy for unplugging your ears is to tightly pinch your nostrils to keep them tightly closed. You will need to do this with the thumb and forefinger of your hand and then blow out air with your mouth and nostrils closed. This process forces the air out into the ear canal, thereby equalizing the pressure.

Clogged Ear Remedy: Hydrogen Peroxide For Ear Infection

When the clogging is not because of pressure differences but rather because of debris and wax, a good method to unclog your ears is to mix warm water and hydrogen peroxide and use it to drain out the wax from your ears. You will need to lie down when you are doing this with the respective ear facing the ceiling. After the ear has been drained, you dry your ear with a hair dryer. As an alternative to the use of warm water and hydrogen peroxide, you can use warm olive oil. Another possible method of unclogging your ears is to use a mixture of warm water and apple cider vinegar, pour it into the affected ear and then use a bulb syringe to pull out the wax. You need to dry your ears after draining out the wax.
