Chest congestion refers to the build-up of mucus and phlegm inside the bronchial tubes and lungs. This accumulation of phlegm in the chest leads to a feeling of tightness in the chest, accompanied by chest pain which can be slight or even intense if the congestion is severe. The main causes for chest  congestions are prolonged or frequent cold and cough and exposure to the cold. In order to treat chest congestion and chest ache, it is important to first treat the cough and cold. One of the most effective home remedies for treating a cough is taking 1 spoonful of freshly extracted onion juice every morning till the cough has been treated. Alternately you can mix equal quantities of onion juice and honey and keep it aside for 4-5 hours before consuming 1 tsp of this tonic twice a day. This helps to effectively treat the infection and get rid of the phlegm in the system. You can also prepare an excellent cough syrup at home which helps to treat the cough and prevent congestion. For this, you need to mix 2 tsp of onion juice with 2 tsp of lemon juice, add some water to this, bring it to a boil then stir 2 tsp of honey in this decoction and allow it to cool for 5 to 6 hours. You can take 1 tsp of this syrup twice a day for best results.

Chest Congestion Home Remedies:

Ginger also works miracles when it comes to relieving cough and chest congestion, so you should try and have 1 tsp of fresh ginger juice twice a day, with some honey to improve the taste. Sipping on hot ginger tea is also beneficial since it not only works to get rid of the phlegm accumulated in the system, but the warm liquid also helps to soothe the tightness and discomfort in the chest due to congestion. Another effective herbal tea can be prepared by mixing a small piece of the ginger root which has been grated, 1-2 garlic seeds and some lemon juice in boiling water. You should continue to boil the water for a while, before straining it, adding some honey to improve the taste and sipping on it. This is highly effective since the ginger, garlic and honey help to fight the infection while the lemon loosens the cough and eases respiration. In addition to this, you should take care to keep your chest adequately covered and warm. While it is important to step outside and get plenty of fresh air in your lungs, remember not to expose yourself to the cold, especially your chest.
