Chest congestion causes
Your son’s immune system is not yet fully developed, which is probably why the congestion appears so severe. An additional point to deduce from what you stated is that the Phlegm is not coming out of him. This could indicate that that phlegm inside is very dry or that because of a condition called nasal drip, the infection has spread further down to his lungs. In either of these situations, a check with the doctor is required because the advent of pneumonia in a child of this age is very dangerous indeed. The grinding of the teeth is something that most children do and is not related to the current ailment.
Whether pneumonia or any other respiratory infection, your son is facing complications because of inflammation. This is a natural body process from the immune system to fight off infections. When an infection is identified by the body, histamine is secreted by a bunch of cells in the surrounding tissue called mast cells. Histamine then causes mucous to be secreted in large amounts so that the invading pathogens are trapped in one area and are in an environment suitable for the white blood cells to come to the rescue. In a normal course of healing, the white blood cells with some help from antibiotics and antifungal, treatments destroy the invading bacteria. However, this mucus can also cause a lot of trouble to the respiratory system requiring constant removal by coughing or blowing the nose; otherwise, one would not be able to breathe. Medically, at this point your doctor would prescribe a decongestant. A decongestant is a common term for antihistamine. This is administered to give some relief to patients and to allow them to rest and breathe a bit.
Chest Congestion home Remedy
While these are administered, you should also try some home remedies as well. Considering that you are dealing with a three year old, most of the remedies will have to be taken in liquid form – the answer then are soups and tea. Into any type of soup, add some black pepper, garlic and some chili powder. These will decongest the system in a matter of minutes. Garlic and chili have antibiotic properties. Black pepper has the quality of irritating the nose and causing a sneeze. This same mechanism is useful for loosening up any mucus. Lots of water is also required to keep the mucus in a more fluid form. A steam inhalation would also help to decongest the nasal cavity and lungs.
