Red Blotches: Spots on Skin | Allergic Reaction Itchy Bumps

Red Blotches And Spots on Skin: My wife has swollen ankles and feet and has red blotches and Itchy Bumps on skin. She is a recovering alcoholic for 3 weeks? Please suggest?

Red Blotches And Spots on Skin

Generally the human skin develops blotches because of allergens. Yeast which is commonly found in human skin, in humid and warm conditions can get aggravated and cause infections. The resulting infection causes spots, marks and blotches that vary in color and size depending on the severity of the infection. These blotches can vary in color form a light pink rash to a dark pink with tinges of red. These are most of the times painless, however, in some cases can be itchy and irritating. A person who has these blotches can however; experience a pricking sensation when there is a rise in the body temperature. The pain or irritation will more often than not, however, reduce when one starts to sweat.

These blotches don’t seem to have any connection with the fact that your wife is a recovering alcoholic as alcoholism causes swelling of the limbs and lethargy more than red blotches. However, if you feel that the two are connected then the problem might be one that needs medical attention. Here are a few tips nonetheless that will help in the reduction of the blotches. A healthy diet is the best way to keep skin healthy. Fruits and veggies contain various anti-oxidants that help detoxify and purify the blood. This can work wonders in the health of a recovering alcoholic as alcohol leaves the blood stream full of toxicants.  A strong immune system is the most effective way to fight infections. Yoghurt contains acidophilus. This keeps the levels of bacteria in check and helps reduce any kind of infection.

One can also use over the counter ointments and medication to combat skin allergic reactions and infections. Sometimes these blotches can be caused by certain deficiencies in your skin.  It is advised that you use a shampoo containing selenium sulphide. Apply the shampoo to the affected area and wash it off after a few minutes. The selenium sulphide helps in getting rid of the blotches. As far as the swelling of her limbs is concerned it is referred to as edema and is a common side effect of alcoholism. It occurs when fluid is retained in the body. Remedies for reducing edema include cutting down on your intake of salt, drinking an adequate amount of water and getting regular exercise. When going to bed elevate the feet with a pillow or two. This helps in reducing the swelling. One can also make a mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water (heated) and soak a towel in it and wrap it around the swollen area. After a few minutes, repeat the process using cold water. If this does not clear up within a day or two, your wife will need to visit the doctor as this could be related to alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
