Home Remedies For Age Spots Removal
Age spots or lentigos are a benign discoloration of the skin. The appellation of liver spots is an old one and was used because it was thought that the problem occurred due liver dysfunction. That theory has been disproved and it is understood now that the problem is caused by skin damage over a period of time. This problem is very common among the elderly because the process of skin repair does not occur as efficiently. Basically, an age spot is a good sign to tell you that the skin has given up on repairing itself from sun damage. Treating this problem requires that you bleach the affected skin. This can be done with any cosmetic product that claims to whiten the skin. You can also use a cream with a retinoid base, as this will induce skin growth. However, no matter what you do, if you re-expose the affected spot to the sun, the condition will return and you will have to treat it all over again.
Age spots occur due to a concentration of melanin in one spot of the body. This spot is usually in an area that is frequently exposed to the sun. When the skin is exposed to the sun, it is prone to damage from ultraviolet radiation that can destroy cellular DNA structures leading to cell death or cancerous growths – melanoma. To protect itself, the skin secretes a substance called melanin from the melanocyte cells. This substance can absorb ultraviolet light and convert the radiation to heat; thereby, protecting the body from damage. However, some of the radiation does get through and the occasional damage has to be corrected by the skin. Over the course of many years, or the extent of exposure to radiation, the skin becomes unable to repair the damage and in one final attempt secretes a highly concentrated dose of melanin into a specific spot. On subsequent exposure to the sun, this darkens to form an age spot.
To bleach age spots at home, you need to continuously exfoliate your skin and bleach it. To exfoliate your skin, use some salicylic acid in the form of pads or a face wash and use it on the areas with age spots. Next, make a vitamin C-rich application pack from lemon juice and strawberries. Mix some vitamin E oil from an oral supplement capsule in this and apply it to the skin every night before you go to bed.
