Yoga Bolsters For Supine Poses

Yoga Bolsters come in a variety of shapes and sizes; they are actually shaped cushions used in certain forms of Yoga such as Ananda Yoga, Bikram Yoga and Kripalu Yoga. Yoga Bolsters help provide support for those parts of the body (especially, the abdomen, back and legs) to enable students to perform poses more easily and comfortably.

Yoga Bolsters are extremely beneficial in Yoga practice particularly in Supine and Twisting postures. At times, when one feels the need to align his or her body properly or hold the spine erect, Yoga Bolsters help support and straighten even the most obstinate and inflexible backbone. Yoga Bolsters are also used to relieve tension in the neck, upper and lower back, and abdomen as well as in the legs particularly in some of those tricky poses.

Besides supports Yoga Bolsters, when used with Yoga Mats also help cushion the lower body. All this makes the Yoga Session a much more enjoyable experience. Above all, they are light and easily portable and can be stored conveniently in a closet or in drawer, without occupying too much space.

Yoga Bolsters are of different sizes, shapes and colors and are designed using a variety of materials, all intended to suit the preferences and needs of different students. But you must make sure which type of Yoga Bolster you most need and accordingly make your decision as each one is unique and serves different purposes.

The Most Common Types Of Yoga Bolsters

Cylindrical Bolsters – These are normally used parallel or perpendicular to the spine. They are also placed under the knees to help stretch the lower back. Such bolsters also provide great support for a wide range of Yoga Poses, particularly forward bends.

Rectangular Bolsters - These bolsters are designed to help practitioners stretch their bodies and relax in most needed areas. These are, generally, to ease the pressure on the lower back or below the knees.

Breathing Bolsters - These facilitate better relaxation and deeper breathing. They are most often used to support the muscles on either sides of the spine. This, subsequently, lets you relax better. These bolsters are also be used as an inclined surface to enable both sides of the chest to stretch and drop to the floor. This helps you to breathe slowly and more deeply.

Zafu - These are cushions that are used to raise the hips. They are mostly used for cross-legged sitting poses, making you a lot more stable and are ideal for Meditation.
