There are yoga moves to tuck in your abdomen. However yoga is a complete health package which keeps your body fit and supple. It also refines your mental faculties. It tones up every part of the body. It removes excess fat and redistributes the same proportionately over the body. It regulates weight. It slows down ageing process and you retain your youthful look. Yoga also teaches art of relaxation. It gives you peace and tranquility.
The following yoga postures are not only good for abdomen and abdominal muscles; they have other therapeutic effects which you will feel eventually after practicing regularly for a few weeks:
- Surya Namaskar (The Sun Salutation)- The Sun salutation is a combination of 12 poses and the entire body gets exercised. It is a general conditioning exercise.
- Pavanamuktasana Asana (The Wind Relieving Pose)- This yoga pose strengthens abdominal and neck muscles and reduces obesity of abdomen, thighs and arms.
- Makarasana (The Crocodile Pose)- The Crocodile pose reduces stress and fatigue, tones abdominal organs and the heart, loosens shoulder, hip and ankle joints.
- Bhujangasana (The Cobra Pose)- The Cobra pose soothes back ache, makes the spine more flexible and stimulates digestion.
- Salabhasana (The Locust Pose)- The Locust Pose tones the spine and abdominal organs, strengthens all joints of upper and lower extremities.
- Ustrasana (The Camel Pose)- The Camel Pose tones the spine, abdominal and pelvic organs. The yoga pose also strengthens shoulder and hip joints, broadens chest and expands lungs.
- Dhanurasana (The Bow Pose)- The Bow pose tones heart and adrenals, reduces fat around the waist, thighs and arms, tones abdominal and pelvic organs and makes spine flexible.
- Viparitkarani (The Inverted Pose)- The inverted posture recharges the body with energy. In this posture the blood flows abundantly to the neck, throat and head. The thyroid and pituitary glands get rejuvenated. It also helps in retaining youthful look as this pose prevents formation of wrinkles.
- Ardha Halasana (The Half Plough Pose)- It tones the abdominal muscles and is good for constipation. It also gives relief to people suffering from varicose veins.
- Shavasana (The Corpse Pose)- As the name suggests, the corpse pose relaxes the body and mind as you lie on the floor motionless.
Also incorporate pranayama (the controlled rhythmic breathing) in your daily routine to get optimum result. The most effective breathing techniques are Bhastrika (The Bellows Breath) and Kapalbhati (The Cleansing Breath).
It may not be possible to practice all the above mentioned yoga poses. It is important to have a yoga teacher who will guide you properly. You may select the yoga poses you are comfortable with keeping in perspective your age, gender, weight and build and capacity.
