Is Yoga A Cure For Hypothyroidism

Yoga and Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a common disease and can be successfully treated. Hypothyroidism is low levels of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones secreted in an insufficient quantity slow down the routine processes of your body which leads to Hypothyroidism. Different secretion levels of thyroid can cause hypothyroidism as well as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroid is the more active one as compared to Hypothyroid.

Yoga Asanas (postures) can help in curing the state of Hypothyroidism.

Cat flow is a very effective yoga asana for the proper care of your spinal area. Cat flow like motion increases the blood circulation which is essential for the spinal health. Sit on the floor in a Cat like pose. Preferably place a soft cloth underneath your knee. It serves as a knee padding to avoid strain on them. Remain in the same position while looking in the front. Breathe-in and slowly bring your chest downwards. Now breathe out slowly and arch your spine upwards. Lower your chin towards the chest. Do this using slow breath (use sound if comfortable). Then repeat the same with faster breaths. Combination of these two would be good.

Basically this reduces the tension in your spine area. The Cat pose immensely reduces any lingering pain in the spine. This asana can also be done after practicing a number of high intensity yoga postures to get your spine balanced. Every time you perform this asana, breathe in & out, flowing up & down at least 5 times. Please take care of your knees while practicing this pose as excessive body weight can bring too much pressure on them.

Another Yoga asana which is effective is Ardha Matsyasana  (The Half Fish Pose). To practice this pose you need to lie down on the floor on your back. Place your hands besides your hips. Bend the knees, with the heels touching your buttocks. Lift up your chest & pelvis upwards. While doing this your shoulders, neck, hand and feet should remain grounded on the floor. Take your feet back under your tailbone and rest your body on the heels. Placing your hands besides your head, rise up on your head. Place your hands on your chest as in a Namaste (folded hands); it can be kept for support. Spread your knees a bit and try to take them down till they are firmly grounded. This Asana strengthens your shoulders and neck and increases the elasticity of the lower back.

These Asanas are very effective to improve the state of Hypothyroidism, doing it on a regular basis would bring out the expected results.
