As far as undertaking yoga is concerned, I’m a beginner, would power yoga suit me?
Power Yoga is a fast paced form of Yoga that is modeled after the traditional Ashtanga and Vinyasa styles of Yoga. It consists of series of energetic, flowing movements that help to develop strength and flexibility. The pioneers of the Power Yoga movement in the United States are Beryl Bender Birch, Bryan Kest and Baron Baptiste. Each of these Yoga experts teach slightly different styles of Power Yoga. You may be able to find a Power Yoga class that follows the Yoga techniques taught by one of them in your area.
Although it may seem a bit overwhelming to the novice there are many Power Yoga classes that are designed for beginners and might be suitable for you. The Baron Baptiste school of Power Yoga prides itself in teaching a form of Power Yoga that is adapted to every person’s individual needs. If you are reasonably fit and have been exercising regularly, there is no reason why you cannot practice Power Yoga, provided that you can find a suitable Yoga teacher.
If you have not been exercising regularly or are still recovering from the effects of an illness or injury, I would suggest that you start your foray in to the magical world of Yoga by trying one of the less strenuous styles of Yoga.
Iyengar Yoga for Beginners
Iyengar Yoga is a style of Yoga that is especially suited for beginners. This form of Yoga was developed by the famous Yoga guru B. K. S. Iyengar. Iyengar Yoga places a lot of emphasis on teaching correct form and utilizes props such as bolster, cushions, blocks and straps to help students perform the exercises correctly. Thus, it is also an excellent course to pursue before you opt for Power Yoga as it will enable you to learn and perform all the basic Yoga exercises in a proper manner.
Kripalu Yoga for Beginners
Another style of Yoga that is popular with beginners is Kripalu Yoga. This form of Yoga lays more emphasis on meditation and breathing. It involves a gentle approach towards Yoga and is especially suited for the elderly and those recovering from injuries or illness.
Whatever be the style of Yoga that you ultimately choose to pursue, do ensure that you are being taught by a certified Yoga teacher. Although there are many videos and books that teach Yoga, in the initial stages, the insightful guidance of a Yoga teacher can prove invaluable. Also remember that you should not over strain yourself while practicing any of the Yoga postures. Yoga is not supposed to hurt. If it hurts, you are doing something wrong.
