Tips For Beginners Practising Yoga And Pranayama

While Doing Breathing Exercises I Get Light Headed And Feel Numb As I Hold Breath And Exhale

Yoga and pranayama teaches us to breathe more deeply, thus bringing in more oxygen into the body. Those who are new to yoga often feel light headed and numb after holding their breath and exhaling. Of course, there are very few asanas which ask the practitioner to hold his/her breath. Let’s understand more about yoga and breathing.

  • Most yoga gurus say that you should not attempt to hold your breath while doing yoga for achieving the maximum benefit of the practice. It is a good idea to breathe slowly and rhythmically. If you hold your breath, then this might cause you to become dizzy and you might also find it difficult to maintain your posture.
  • Through yoga and pranayama, you can use your lungs to the optimum capacity. The breathing techniques encourage you to breathe slowly and completely, and exhale as much of the toxic air as you can. This helps to bring in more oxygen into the body and expel more toxins.
  • In yoga, the poses that you hold and the breathing techniques are generally well-coordinated.
  • Yogic breathing while doing yoga can enhance your practice and optimize the benefits. The idea is to breathe in more oxygen and exhale stale air.
  • If you are a beginner in yoga, you must learn the body alignment as well as the inhaling and exhaling techniques in yoga, and also learn about coordinating your breathing with your postures. Once you have learnt all this, only then attempt to do yoga breathing. Your yoga teacher will teach you how to breathe in a standing or sitting position. And once you have mastered the breath control, then your teacher will let you coordinate movements with breathing.

Tips For Beginners Who Are Practicing Yoga And Pranayama:

  • You should wear loose and comfortable clothes while practicing yoga and pranayama. This ensures a natural working of the diaphragm and you can do the breathing exercises without any obstruction.
  • Do not eat a meal just before practicing yoga. So make sure that the last meal that you’ve eaten is two or three hours before you begin your practice. Likewise, eat a couple of hours after doing yoga and not immediately.
  • Practicing yoga in the morning is the best although you can even practice pranayama and yoga in the evening.
  • Posture is very important while doing pranayama and yoga. If you sit with your back straight, the neck aligned with your spine, and chin tucked slightly, then this will prevent you from becoming dizzy during pranayama and yoga.
  • Make sure that you learn your breathing exercises and other yoga activities from a qualified teacher.
