How To Learn Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation was introduced to the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It is called transcendental because it brings you to a state of meditation wherein you think ‘beyond the material world’ and focus on ‘nothingness’. You need to do Transcendental Meditation for 15-20 minutes twice a day to reap the benefits of meditation over a period of time. Meditation is known to increase physical and emotional wellness by reducing pain and stress, calming the mind and giving clarity and concentration. You also become more connected to the spirit within you and realize your latent creative abilities.

Transcendental Meditation is neither a belief nor a religion but it is a discipline that needs to be practiced for results. Transcendental Meditation brings about physiological and psychological changes which are self enhancing and positive. It differs from other types of meditation because it does not require concentration or focus of any kind and is more relaxing.

Learning Transcendental Meditation

There are books written by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and others on this subject. ‘The Science of Being and Art of Living: Transcendental Meditation’ is written by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This book is an introduction to Transcendental meditation. There are tapes and CDs that are available as well. Several internet sites cover this form of meditation.

However, since each individual is unique and different, it is better to learn Transcendental Meditation from a certified practitioner. Once you have learnt how to meditate in this way, you may practice alone. Or you may choose to be part of a group who meet regularly every day to practice. There are also residential courses that are conducted which are an option.

Since Transcendental Meditation is a certified practice, no one would teach it for free. Introductory lectures may be free, but to learn the method, you would have to pay. Charging a fees places value to whatever is taught and ensures that the student is willing to pay to acquire a technique that will give him greater benefits in the long run than the cost of the lessons.
Meanwhile, to understand how beneficial meditation is, try this simple technique. Sit quietly, eyes closed, undisturbed in a room, and breathe without effort. Let the thoughts flow in an out, without paying any special attention to them or resisting them. The mind will begin to settle down and you will experience a change in your thought process. The whole idea is to not resist or strain in any way. Come out of your meditative state slowly and gently.
