Tingling Fingers Among Yoga Practitioners
Tingling sensation or experiencing tingling fingers when doing yoga could be a sign of poor blood circulation during the exercise. There are many reasons to such an experience and it could range from as simple as anxiety that is causing it to neurological problems. In most cases it is likely that a particular yoga pose may not be performed correctly. Check with your yoga instructor to see whether the movements and motions are in sync with the actual pose to rule out any disparities in practice. It is also likely that you would have advanced in your yoga practices and your body may not be yet ready to go through such movements. Consult a yoga expert at the class you are taking and find out if the tingling fingers sensation is common among other such yoga practitioners.
Paraesthesia
Tingling sensation is also known as paresthesia. Paraesthesia sometimes occurs during certain activities and has no obvious long-term physical effect. The feeling of tingling fingers is usually the feeling of pins and needles or that the fingers are “asleep”, but have no connection however with the phenomenon of sleep.
The sensation of tingling fingers may be temporary or chronic. Mostly when there is pressure applied on a particular nerve, the tingling sensation occurs. If the pressure is removed the feeling is likely to subside. However, it is not a common phenomenon to experience tingling fingers during practice or yoga and hence there may be underlying reasons to its cause. In medical terms, there are numerous conditions that can cause tingling fingers. Conditions such as multiple sclerosis, diabetic neuropathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve injuries show symptoms of tingling fingers in addition to other symptoms. You will need to check with your doctor to rule out any of these conditions. It is important however to describe and distinguish which of the fingers are tingling in order to arrive at the proper diagnosis.
In between the varied yoga poses you could try to shake your fingers for a while to resume proper blood flow to the fingers. However, it is important that your do not ignore the tingling sensation if it is a persistent or recurring experience. Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of main causes of tingling fingers. If you are prone to putting repetitive stress on your wrists or fingers the feeling of tingling fingers could be an early sign of carpal tunnel syndrome.
