Blood Pressure: A Psychosomatic Disorder Cured Through Yoga

Why Do Blood Pressure Rise And Fall

You probably won’t believe this, but almost every single human being is suffering from slight blood pressure. While blood flows through our system with a certain pressure, it can sometimes happen that, for reasons known or unknown, our blood pressure rises and falls. The main known reasons for these are unbridled anger, prolonged anxieties, excessive worrying, fears and phobias, physical exertion, stress and tensions. Under such circumstances your heart is put under extra pressure to help the system cope with the situation. Unfortunately, today’s lifestyle is such that we get into tense and stressful situations far too often. The result is that after a while it has become habitual for the heart to pump blood at that required rate and the blood pressure either rises continually or falls. First and foremost, understand that High Blood Pressure is not an illness. It is just a psychosomatic disorder that can be rectified.

Can Be Cured Through Yoga Practices

1.  Change in Lifestyle
2.  Diet
3.  Yogasanas (Yoga Postures)
4.  Pranayama (Breathing Exercises)
5.  Meditation

Change in Lifestyle

This largely involves practicing that old maxim: “Early to bed and early to rise is (still) the best way to be healthy, wealthy and wise.” If your waking and sleeping habits aren’t regulated, we suggest you do so now. Set an alarm for the mornings, don’t keep late nights, learn to draw the line at work, don’t set yourself unattainable targets, go for walks in the open air regularly morning and evening.

Diet

Your doctor will tell you your diet should be salt-free. Yoga tells us to have a Sattvic diet, meaning pure and simple. It also means predominantly vegetarian, rich in salads and juicy fruits and low on meats, deep-fried stuff and junk foods. Also, if you drink and smoke we suggest you give up. Don’t try to reduce. If you want to be rid of your High BP, rid yourself of drinking and smoking.

Yogasanas (Yoga Poses)

We suggest you join a Yoga center near your home or workplace and tell the instructor about your problem. If you want to practice at home, by yourself we suggest you do the following:

  • Sukhasana (Easy Pose)
  • Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose)
  • Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
  • Vrikshasana (Tree Pose)
  • Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose)
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
  • Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
  • Matsyasana (Fish Pose)
  • Paschimottanasana (Seated hands to feet pose)
  • Ushtrasana (Camel Pose)

Pranayama (Breathing Exercises)

You should practice mild to moderate

  • kapalabhatti (Skull Cleansing)
  • Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
  • Ujjayi (Ocean Breath)

People suffering from High BP should also practice lots of Shavasana (Corpse Pose) for at least 15 to 30 minutes twice daily.

Meditation

Learn some simple meditation, either breath meditation, Vipassana or OM chanting and practice it for around 15 minutes to start with. Over time you will find yourself enjoying your practices and prolonging.
