How Is Transcendental Meditation Done

Transcendental meditation was founded in 1957 by the renowned spiritualist, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In transcendental meditation, you are taught how to meditate for 20 minutes twice a day. It is simple to learn and practice and brings great benefit to all areas of life. It is supposedly different from other types of meditation because it is not mind control or mental discipline. It is not concentration or a way of life. You don’t have to control your breathing or muscles. You have to join a transcendental meditation course to learn the technique. It involves sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. It allows your mind to settle inward beyond thought to experience the source of thought or pure awareness also known as transcendental consciousness. This is the most silent and peaceful level of consciousness, when you connect with your innermost self. In this state of restful alertness, your brain cooperates with greater coherence and your body feels deeply rested.

People of all ages, cultures and religions can learn this technique. Research carried out on transcendental meditation states that it naturally and effortlessly produces the transcending experience of a state of restful alertness. It involves the repetition of a mantra which is given to individuals by the teacher. The followers of transcendental meditation are claimed to be more than six million worldwide.

Like other meditation techniques, its main appeal is the overcoming of stress. Transcendental meditation claims to be the ‘science of creative intelligence’ in which you can get a degree. It also claims to take a person to a new state of consciousness and positively affects all bodily functions like metabolic rate, oxygen consumption rate, body’s production of carbon dioxide, hormone production and brain waves.

Another effect claimed by transcendental meditation is what is known as the Maharishi effect. According to transcendental meditation scientists, collective meditation causes changes in individuals and these go outward into society and improve it. In individuals, life changes because of the physical and mental change. You feel calmer and more alert, your thinking is clearer and more dynamic and you have more energy. Also you are more relaxed and your body is ready for a good night’s sleep. Along with calming and quietening the mind, this meditation can improve concentration adding more clarity and control over the thought process. With this, it is easier to make decisions and control ones life and have faith and confidence in ones sense of judgment and ability to live well.

To learn transcendental meditation, you can arrange a free introduction session. Then instruction takes place over 5 days with every session continuing for about two hours. By the end of the course, all the knowledge and experience you need to meditate on your own at home. Transcendental meditation claims to be more powerful and effective than other forms of meditation, but it also has many opponents. It is up to an individual to decide, which form of meditation improves their quality of life.
