Steps for making Beeswax Candles at Home

Beeswax candles are a healthier type of candle. Beeswax is made when the bees are making their honeycombs. The top of the honeycomb contains the beeswax. Unlike candles made from paraffin, beeswax candles burn cleaner.

This could be helpful to a person who suffers from allergies or asthma. The scents that can be added to the beeswax can have a calming effect that can help with sleeping problems. Another plus of a beeswax candle- they last up to five times longer than a paraffin candle.

Beeswax Candle Making With Wick

Making beeswax candles is relatively easy to make. You can obtain beeswax from a crafts store, health food store or a local beekeeper. Beeswax has a natural honey scent, so when you want to add scents to it you need to pick complimentary scents in small amounts.

You will need:

  • Beeswax
  • Wick and metal wick clip
  • Pencil
  • Flat bottomed container
  • Double boiler
  • Wooden spoon
  • Container with a spout
  • Fragrance (optional, some suggestions are: almond, vanilla, papaya, mango, etc.)

Step one: Make sure your container is clean and dry. Now it is time to make the wick. Thread the end of your wick so that it goes through the wick stand. Now place the wick stand in the container. Make sure the wick stand is flat at the bottom of the container. Wrap the other end around the pencil; you want the wick to be taut when you lay the pencil across the top of the container.

Step two: Melt your beeswax in the double boiler. Keep stirring the wax with a wooden spoon. Once the wax has completely melted to a smooth texture, add a drop of added scent if you desire.

Step three: Carefully pour the hot melted wax into your prepared container (this container has also been previously cleaned). Using a container with a spout will make pouring the hot wax into the candle container easier and safer.

Step four: Pour the melted wax into the container you have prepared for it. Be careful not to accidently bump the candle wick. You want to keep it centered and you don’t want to accidently cause the wick to fall into the hot wax. Let the candle set for twenty-four hours. This allows the candle to dry. It is very important to make sure the candle is completely dry before using. Before burning the candle, trim the wick. Now you can enjoy the wonderful scent of your new candle.
